Trump post urging Taylor Swift to 'stay out of politics' is fake

(AFP) - A fabricated screenshot purporting to show former U.S. President Donald Trump criticizing singer Taylor Swift in a social media post and saying she should “stay out of politics” has misled users online.
The image originates from a satire account on social media platform X.
“This whole Taylor Swift thing has gotten so completely out of hand. Why anyone would listen to her when it comes to politics is beyond me,” reads the screenshot, which has been shared several times, opens new tab on Facebook.
The text in the image continues, “She is a washed up entertainer clinging to anything to stay relevant so she is ‘hanging around’ with an NFL player. Washed-up entertainers need to know their lane and stay in it and stay out of politics. We all know that I am not a washed- up entertainer because they gave me a star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood. What has Taylor ever achieved?”
The earliest iteration of the screenshot is a Jan. 30, 2024 post on platform X, opens new tab by an account whose description says, in part, “Occasional Parody.” The user has said in the comments, opens new tab that they made up the post.
Several other elements in the screenshot also point to it being fake. The date, for example, reads Jan. 30, 2026.
The username in the image “@TheRealPrez” also does not correspond with any of Trump’s official social media profiles. His official X and Truth Social accounts are named “@realDonaldTrump.”
The post cannot be found on Trump’s Truth Social profile, opens new tab. As of this article’s publication, the most recent post, opens new tab on Trump's X account dates to Aug. 25, 2023.
Swift, who endorsed President Joe Biden in 2020, has been targeted by Trump allies, opens new tab ahead of the 2024 presidential election, with some suggesting that she not get involved in politics, opens new tab. The singer has not yet announced her support for any candidate.
A spokesperson for Trump did not respond to a Reuters request for comment.
